Microbrew Festival and Cake Concert at Del Mar Race Track

There is nothing like a good hot bowl of chili, complete with cheese, onions and cornbread topped off with an ice cold brewski. Well the combination of both was plentiful as far as the eye could see at the annual Del Mar Microbrew Festival and Cake Concert held on August 13, 2005.

Patrons Enjoying the day at Del Mar

Every year, the Del Mar race track is converted into a beer haven for those 21 years old and up as 20 local breweries made their finest beers on tap available to sample and enjoy. As guests enjoyed their beers, they were still able to enjoy the pony races and cheer their favorite across the finish line. But the activites were not just for the adults, there was plenty of activities for the young and old. Among the activities available was the surf simulator, pony rides, and rock climbing wall, among other rides and activities for the whole family. Early risers had the opportunity to watch the jockeys and horses morning workouts at Daybreak at Del Mar from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and also enjoy breakfast in the Clubhouse Terrace.

The Mechanical Bull ready to take on a new challenger!

Other events of the day included a Chili Cook-Off, where the best chili masters bring their best chili concoctions. These participants of The Western Regional Chili Cook-Off will compete in the red and green chili, and salsa categories. With over $2,000 in prizes, chili cook-off winners advance to the 2005 world Championships. The best part of the competition was the free samples that the patrons could enjoy and decide for themselves who really deserved the prize. For those with nerves of steel, there was a mechanical bull ready to take on anyone up to the challenge. To top off the day, the band Cake, rocked the house at sunset and a good time was had by all. For those who could not make it, mark your calendar for next year, it will be worth the price of admission.
